There are many reasons that diets fail.   Some diets are just too strict, such as the Atkins diet.   When you severely restrict the types of food you eat, you are setting yourself up for failure every time.   On Atkins, once you go back to eating normally, you just regain all the weight.  The Atkins diet may be most effective for someone severely obese who is under a doctor’s supervision.  I wouldn’t recommend this diet to the layperson.
